Get to Give HOW IT WORKS

Raising Awareness

A IRATE & First Friends Mission

The Mission

Our mission is to harness social media, and other information technologies to raise awareness about the plight of asylum seekers who are being detained in detention facilities and County Jails throughout New Jersey. We also advocate for dignified treatment and humane conditions of immigrant detainees, as well as raise funds for detainee assistance. In reaching our goal we can assist an asylum seeker upon release with a $100 food voucher, $100 gift card towards clothing/shoes, $50 for travel expenses, a $50 international calling card to re-connect with family members back home and $500 dollars to be used towards rental assistance. With the help of Soar Nation and your support asylum seekers facing fear of persecution in their country of origin will be given immediate stability and will not be left destitute and homeless upon release.

1. Support Groups for Released Detainees
- We have started holding support groups for those being released from detention.  These meetings give paroles and asylees an opportunity to share their knowledge, experience, and provide emotional support for one another.

2. We are still seeking assistance with finding housing for paroles and asylees.
- The shelters we work with do not always have the capacity to hold everyone.  We are finding that locating affordable housing, such as apartments and singles rooms is becoming more difficult.

3. Volunteer Visitors
- We currently are in need of more Volunteer visitors to go to Hudson County Correctional Facility which is located in Kearny, NJ on Truck RT. 1 & 9.  Currently there are roughly 700 detainees being held.  We do not have enough visitors.  We are willing to train people in groups of 5 or more of people are interested.

 4. Religious Services
- We also will soon be providing religious services for detainees being held in Hudson County.

About this organization

IRATE (Interfaith Refugee Action Team Elizabeth) & First Friends is a charitable, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to treating immigrants with dignity and compassion. As First Friends, we provide visitors and non-legal assistance for immigrants held in detention. Within the organization, IRATE functions as an advocate for immigrant rights, specifically the end of mandatory detention of asylum seekers and non-criminal immigrant detainees. We believe such detention is morally wrong, legally suspect and wasteful of taxpayer funds.
